Monday 28th April 2025
International Worker' Memorial Day
Please join us for a short reflection as we remember workers who have lost their lives, suffered injuries or become ill due to their jobs
International Workers' Memorial Day (IWMD) is a day of reflection and action, highlighting the importance of workplace health and safety. Trade unions, organisations, and communities around the world hold events such as vigils, commemorations, and campaigns to honour those affected and to push for stronger protections in the workplace.
The day serves as a reminder that workplace accidents and illnesses are often preventable, emphasising the need for employers, governments, and workers to collaborate in ensuring safer working conditions.
We will meet at the Entrance Arch to Edward Lucas’s 1790 Foundry, which has been preserved in situ in what is now a peaceful ornamental garden at the junction of Lea Road and Chesterfield Road, just north of Dronfield Station. Asbestos was widely used in foundries, and the Edward Lucas Foundry is an important part of the area's industrial heritage. As we gather in remembrance, we acknowledge the past struggles of workers and reaffirm our commitment to fighting for safer workplaces today and in the future.
There will be refreshments served afterwards.
