According to official figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 5,000 die each year from asbestos-related disease, including 2,500 from mesothelioma and 2,500 from lung cancer.


However, new research by Daniel Murphy, Professor of Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma at the University of Glasgow, suggests that many lung cancer cases could be caused by asbestos, and that figures could be as high as 22,500 deaths a year.
